This was a first for our family (in the past we have mostly gone camping). We rented 2 houses on the beach and had an awesome time. It was beautiful scenery, great company and delicious food. This was our 2nd reunion without Mom. We thought of her often so in a way she was still with us. I have so many pictures to share and since this is my blog to do whatever I want with here they all are! Having fun at the beach.

Here is a look up the coastline:

Dillon and Lauren love water. Marianne, Dad and I took a trip to Twin Falls and stayed with my brother and his family. We had a great time visiting with them. We also visited with my Dad's brother and two of my Mom's sisters. It was so good to see all of them. We took one day to drive to Rupert and see the cemetary. We wanted to leave some flowers but forgot a vase so we had to be creative and make do.

All of the kids had to take a turn smelling the flowers. Here goes nothing!

# 1 I have to read whenever I am eating by myself. Even if it is the back of the cereal box. Usually I am reading something online.

# 2 I have to brush my teeth whenever I take a shower. It doesn't matter the time of day or night. It is just part of the shower routine, I guess.

# 3 I eat ice cream pretty much every day. There is joke on my Dad's side of the family that if we get cut, we bleed ice cream. I have definitely inherited that trait.

# 4 I am lazy and never wash my make up off before going to bed. Gotta love those raccoon eyes in the morning.

# 5 I can't make cookies. The last time I did (in 2003? 2004?) I made some sugar cookies that the nursery was going to decorate during a Christmas enrichment night. They tasted like Play Doh. Gag! (I can make other yummy desserts, just not cookies)

# 6 I used to be a dare devil (I am getting mellow in my old age) and I dropped in on a half pipe to impress my husband.

So I am not sure if these are really peculiar or just random facts about me but there you go. I tag Rachel, Amy and Sam.Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-62625448851567868572008-09-12T13:05:00.012-04:002008-09-12T13:32:37.286-04:00Trip to Idaho: Part TwoMy trip to Idaho started with the Wheeler Reunion. The rest of my time in Idaho the kids and I stayed at my brother's house. He and his wife generously opened up their beautiful home to us. We felt so welcomed and comfortable, we didn't want to leave ;-) One of my sister's timed her visit to Idaho so that we were both there at the same time. She and her children also stayed at my brother's house. We had so much fun. We ate yummy food, watched movies, hung out, visited with friends and family in the area and played many hours of Settlers of Cataan.

The day I arrived, two of my sisters came to show off their new babies (which I had not met yet). The babies are adorable.

Lauren and Dillon were happy to explore my brothers house and stretch their legs after our long day of flying.

My brother's neighborhood has a great park and we took the kids to play one day. It was beautiful! The reunion this year was in memory of my Mom and it was so good to be there with her brothers and sisters and to remember her and honor her. Of course it was a little sad too because we obviously would have loved to have her there with us. I am sure she was there in spirit. We rode up with my Dad and went a day early to help get the campsite ready. Despite forgetting some key items (flashlight anyone?) we made it work. Dillon and Lauren love camping and getting dirty :-) The little cousins had a blast playing together. And now on to the pictures!

Much of the time when we are traveling blankies are always close at hand. And I am getting ready to go visit my family and go to two reunions and will be on vacay for a month! I just wanted to apologize for the lack of posts lately and for the lack there will be in the next few weeks. But I will be back!!! See you in August.Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-75096054676569180902008-06-12T16:36:00.006-04:002008-06-12T23:20:26.362-04:00An Ode to StrawberriesOne of my favorite childhood memories is of picking strawberries from our strawberry patch and eating them, warm from the sun and deliciously juicy on a hot summer day. I don't have a strawberry patch now so I have to resort to buying my fresh fruit from the grocery store. I love this time of year because strawberries are so much cheaper than any other time and I will buy them at every trip to the store. The inspiration for this post is this little guy, whom I am calling Big Daddy.

This is seriously the biggest strawberry I have ever seen! I feel like I can't post unless I have pictures to go with. Silly, I know, but that is how I feel. In addition to the missing camera I have had my in laws visiting and then I was gone to Girls Camp for a week.

While my in laws were here we went to the Georgia Aquarium and also to the Atlanta Zoo. They were both a lot of fun and I would recommend going if you get the chance. I have a funny story from the zoo. Dillon has this obsession with water right now. Whenever we are driving he has his little eyes peeled for lakes and ponds and then he will scream at the top of his lungs "Water!" or "Wa-Wa!" whichever strikes his fancy. While at the zoo, we walk up to the Tiger exhibit and there is a wall of glass and then a little pond of water and a slight hill with trees etc. Standing in the water like 8 feet from us is the tiger! Everyone is so excited to see him except for Dillon. He was just excited to see the water. And then the tiger walks right up to the glass and starts to lick it! It was so cool. And what is Dillon still talking about? Yep, you guessed it - the water. It was so funny because the rest of us were just wowed that the tiger was right there in front of us and Dillon could have cared less.

So last week I went to Girl's Camp. I was gone from early Tuesday morning until Friday afternoon. It was the first time I was gone that long from my kids and I was missing them so much! Camp itself was great. It was so fun to spend with the girls and bond with them. Our stake really did an outstanding job. The only downer was that it was SO hot and muggy. But I am glad it didn't rain. I was happy to get home to my kids and I was totally bawling when I saw them. My sweet mother in law stayed an extra week to help my husband watch them. I think she was happy for me to get home too.

Some exciting news today - I have a new nephew! My younger sister had her baby this morning. He was 8 lbs 6 oz and 21 1/2 inches long. She had a good, quick delivery. I can't wait to see pictures.Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-2714847300316728922008-05-19T21:54:00.001-04:002008-05-19T23:00:33.562-04:00A Fun WeekendI finally got to go to an art show with Dustin! For those of you didn’t know, Dustin is working for an amazing artist, who also happens to be his sister’s husband.

My sister in law and I have been wanting to go to a show with them (my husband and hers) and this one worked out really well since it was only about 5 hours away near Charleston, South Carolina. We tried to do it as cheaply as possible since we took everyone with us! So this is what it looked like:

My sister in law and brother in law, their 3 kids, the babysitter and Grandma (brother in law’s mom) all rode in their big van pulling a little U-haul trailer with all of the sculptures and pedestals. My husband and I and our kiddo's rode in our mini van. We got 2 hotel rooms with 2 full beds in each one. Brother in law and sister in law slept in one bed, Grandma in the 2nd. Kid 1 & 2 slept on the floor and kid 3 slept in a pack n play. In our room, my husband and I slept in one bed and the babysitter slept in the other one with both of our kids in pack in plays.

We also tried to plan cheaper meals and took stuff with us to cut down on costs: like sandwiches for lunches, the free continental breakfast at the hotel and easy Mac n cheese for dinner.

We took a babysitter because this show has some really nice meals for the artists in the evenings (which I am going to talk about in depth down below) and we both wanted to go to all of them. We took a girl in our ward that is home from college for the summer and she was great!

The first night's party was held at a historic estate home that is now a Bed and Breakfast. Black Tie was optional. We wore nice church clothes. The 2nd night's party was held at the home of a couple who donate to this art show. Their home is also a Bed and Breakfast. Both nights we had shrimp and grits but they were so different and both SO good.

The first night the shrimp had mushrooms and bacon in a kind of broth served over the grits and topped with cheese and bacon wrapped scallops that were fried. YUM! Also at this party, another surprisingly yummy treat, a grape rolled in goat cheese and then pistachios. WOW. I also liked the salmon on bruschetta and the stuffed mushrooms. It was fun to mingle with everyone but a bit cramped. They had planned to do it outside around the pool but it poured rain right before we got there so they moved it under the porch and inside.

The second night's shrimp and grits were even better. They called it a traditional Lowcountry gourmet meal. The shrimp was in a red sauce with bacon and tomato and the grits were so creamy, I found out later that they were made with butter and half n half or heavy cream. Absolutely sinful. And worth every bite. They also had prime rib, tomato slices with a slice of mozzarella, and delicious fresh green beans.

It was fun to have stimulating conversation and pretend to be an educated person with something to add. We had a very interesting couple at our table. The husband was from Zimbabwe and the wife had lived in Zimbabwe and Zambia but was from England. They had wonderful accents. They were forced to leave Zimbabwe because of something he was doing to protect the wildlife (I think? It was hard to hear and with his accent I didn't quite catch everything he said). He had just gotten back from Uganda because they want him to help with the exact thing he was asked to leave Zimbabwe for. Crazy! Anyway - they were just super nice and it was so cool to talk with them. They live in Montana now. So he was saying that he is a true African American, since he was born in Africa and now lives in America. But he is white. For those of you who don't know - my brother in law is from Nigeria and is black. We all got a kick of that.

I have no pictures :-( , because I can't find my camera. Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-6256438188332773092008-05-10T14:54:00.020-04:002008-05-10T16:49:58.325-04:00Mother's Day: Remembering My MomThis Mother's Day will be very bitter-sweet for me. Bitter since it is the first one since my Mom died and sweet because I am finally a Mom myself. The one year mark of her death is fast approaching and I am still grieving. I think of her so often and miss her terribly. It is especially hard as my children reach milestones and she is the first one I want to call and tell. I have a journal where I am trying to capture all of my thoughts and feelings of her. I want my kids to know who she was. She was such a part of their lives when they were fist born; we spent the first 8 weeks together. I really treasure the memories I have of that time. My Mom was such an amazing person and if I turn out to be even half the woman she was - then I am doing pretty good. She was kind, loyal, sincere, and curious, a good cook, a gardener, patriotic, spiritual, loved the Lord, accepting, hard working, selfless, creative, loving, strong, honest, loved the country and missed the farm, and loved to spend time with her family camping and playing games. She sacrificed so much to raise her children and take care of her family and often forgot herself in the process. As I have gotten older, my husband has teased me about certain things saying that I am turning into my Mom. And for me that is the highest compliment a girl could ask for.

This was my mother's engagement picture. We had a fun filled day with presents and cake and Elmo. My friend said once that when you have babies and toddlers the days feel like they will never end but the years go by fast. I was lazy and used store bought frosting which got soft really fast and was hard to ice with. I also ran out of red food coloring so Elmo is not quite dark enough and I also ran out of red icing but all in all not bad for my first time.

The birthday girl.

Cousin, Uncle and Uncle's Mom. Lots and lots and lots of pictures.

We had so much fun camping. We went to Oconee State Park in South Carolina. It was an unofficial ward activity. There were 18 families from the ward (it was spring break here). It was beautiful there and only about a 2 1/2 hour drive for us. The kids loved being outside all of the time! Whopper started singing Happy Birthday when we lit a twig on fire to light our lantern. It had us both laughing because we didn't know that he even knew Happy Birthday. Due to the proximity of two lakes, Whopper and Whopper Jr both learned how to say Water instead of Wa Wa. Sleeping in the tent went pretty well except for nap time. There was just too much going on during the day. We all got a little sunburned, ate lots of yummy food and all want to go back. Hopefully we can go again this summer.

Here is our campsite (the building is one of the bathrooms/showers):

Our view towards the lake:

Visiting the other lake and looking at ducks:

Dustin and Whopper at the lake.

Whopper Jr loved to pick up rocks and little twigs and carry them around. I cut off 10 inches and donated it to Locks of Love. It is still pretty long by most standards but it feels soooooo short to me! I love it though and it is fun to have a change.

Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-83788133746098894172008-03-24T23:37:00.000-04:002008-03-25T00:16:56.205-04:00Happy Easter! We had a fun Easter holiday with the kids. On Saturday they hunted for eggs and after a little coaching were old pros at picking up the eggs and dropping them in their baskets. On Sunday they wore new Easter clothes and got a basket from the Easter Bunny. They got most of their candy from the eggs in their egg hunt so they only got some chocolate in their baskets.

I cooked Easter dinner with my sister in law and it was delicious. I have come to the realization that I will always think of my Mom when I am cooking because A) I am probably using her recipe B) I want to call her and ask a question and C) She was always cooking yummy stuff for us and that was her way to show her love. This meal was no exception. I made a delicious glaze to go with my ham and I also made Overnight Potato casserole both of which were recipes of my Mom's. It is such a weird feeling because I miss her so much at these times but yet I also feel the closest to her.

Church was nice and I had the opportunity to bear my testimony in Young Women's as part of our lesson. Easter has always been a favorite holiday and time of year and I love the chance to contemplate the resurrection and to be thankful for all that Christ has done for me and for you. So Happy Easter!

Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-27066076477912404232008-03-15T11:43:00.000-04:002008-03-15T11:47:03.014-04:00A BirthdayDustin had a birthday in February and the kids loved his candles. They are learning new stuff all the time. Whopper Jr. is adding a few more words to her vocabulary, ball and baby, being the latest. She is still my big time cuddler and is most happy when I am holding her, she has her silky and is sucking her thumb. Whopper continues to have a fascination with trucks. Anything with 4 wheels is called a truck and he will walk around with a car in each hand. He also loves to go outside and asks me everyday if he can go. We are also now entering into the fighting stage. Whatever toy one has, the other decides they need it right now! I break up lots of tug-o-wars. All.day.long. If you have any advice for me on how to get them to share - I would love to hear it.Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2624057820898206415.post-12428187620701375912008-03-03T20:09:00.000-05:002008-03-03T20:20:17.166-05:00My Life Monday

Rachelle has started My Life Monday again. We started out by visiting Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN. It was so cool. It is a guided tour and they have set tour times. You ride an elevator down 265 ft and then walk a trail 1/2 mile long to the Falls. It is the largest continual water fall inside of a cave in the US. We took the kids with us, but that was a lot of work. Whopper Jr. wasn't walking really great so I held her a lot. While the trail is paved, there are several sets of stairs and also a few parts that are quite narrow so a stroller wouldn't fit through. I would recommend waiting until your kids can totally walk it on their own. We had so much fun and I am definitely going to go back with Dustin. She always made a hot breakfast for us to eat before school because it was the most important meal of the day. And wheat pancakes were one of her favorites. Now I cheated and used Aunt Jemima pancake mix from a box. My Mom would actually grind the wheat in the blender and make the batter from scratch. I hope to do it that way someday. Maybe when my kids are older. The saying is true - you don't know what you have until it's gone. You know, I miss my Mom every day. But I am so thankful that I had a good relationship with her. That I could (and did) call her every day and tell all about the mundane mommy stuff going on in my world and she cared. Besides my husband she was one of my biggest cheerleaders and someone who could comfort me with the pat of a hand. I am typing this with the biggest lump in my throat and tears streaming down my face because I never realized or appreciated enough how much she did for me and how much she sacrificed for me and how much she taught me. Just by doing and showing me that the little things are the ones that count that the most. Like wheat pancakes and home made syrup.

My Mom didn't want me to take this picture. She hadn't fixed her hair yet. She was holding my kids so we could load up our van and head back home. I am so glad I did. I had no idea it would the last time I saw her.

Jeannettehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08211377695963336553noreply@blogger.com8
